Excess growth of the male breast is a condition known as gynecomastia. This is commonly seen in adolescent and teenage males and typically resolves as these patients approach adulthood. Failure of this condition to resolve results in the appearance of a feminine breast, which can lead to social embarrassment and low self-esteem.
Patients with gynecomastia should receive a thorough and adequate work-up to rule out any pathologic causes of breast enlargement. Assuming no underlying cause is identified, breast reduction surgery can provide an effective solution for the management of gynecomastia. In many cases, liposuction alone is sufficient to reduce the size of the breast. However, patients with larger breasts may require the addition of a discreet, well-chosen incision to fully correct the deformity.
