Dr. Lou Adams is a fifth generation physician who has been practicing plastic surgery in Memphis since 1985. He specializes in aesthetic surgery of the face and body. Breast surgery, both aesthetic and reconstructive also comprise a large part of his practice.

His leadership roles include serving as chief executive officer of The Plastic Surgery Group of Memphis and as Medical Director of the East Memphis Surgery Center. He serves on a national quality assurance committee for safety in the performance of surgeries in freestanding surgery centers.

Dr. Adams provides state of the art aesthetic surgery using current techniques including the use of silicone and saline breast implants, ultrasonic assisted liposuction and short scar breast reduction/lift surgery. Many of his patients come to him for breast reconstruction following mastectomy. In creating a new breast, Dr. Adams uses either breast implants or the patient's own tissue.

Dr. Adams see patients from areas throughout the broad midsouth region. He also happily accommodates patients who wish to come to Memphis for his care from outside of this region. He is very accessible to all of his patients and works to ensure they receive attentive care from their first visit through the completion of their healing. His nursing and office staff are an important part of this complete care package.

Dr. Adams is pleased to provide for his aesthetic surgery patients the CosmetAssure insurance coverage plan which helps cover unexpected expenses due to complications in the first 30 days after cosmetic surgery.  He also is happy to endorse the Mentor Corporation warranty for their breast implants which covers the complications of implant failure and/ or capsular contracture during the first 10 years after implantation.

Dr. Adams is a lifelong Memphian and has been married to Connie Dunavant Adams for 32 years. He has three sons and a grandson. His family is always complimented by a Labrador or Golden Retriever, and he has been bold enough to always have at least one Jack Russell terrier in his menagerie to keep him humble and make him smile at least once a day.

Dr. Adams enjoys traveling and loves to commemorate his trips by purchasing local art from the countries he has visited. He also enjoys hunting and trout fishing in the MidSouth as well as the mountains of the West. He enthusiastically supports the Memphis Arts Community.

Abdominoplasty is performed most commonly as part of a Mommy Makeover plan. With this procedure we sometimes include breast surgery also.

Abdominoplasty is performed to improve both the loose skin and abdominal muscle weakening which may be due to pregnancy or weight gain. Abdominoplasty surgery is not to be undertaken lightly. It can be a complex operation but it is usually the only option for returning your abdomen to its pre-baby condition. My patients are very pleased with their new figures after tummy tuck surgery. Arm Lift

An arm lift is an outpatient procedure that is often performed with other procedures, such as breast lift or liposuction. This procedure removes the hanging waddle of skin and fat from the underside of the arms. The hairline scar, which is well place under and behind the arm, is the only sign of this surgery. A natural contour of the arm results free of the hanging, waving flap of skin. Learn more about your arm lift options.

Breast Augmentation

A large part of my practice is devoted to breast surgery. This is evenly divided between aesthetic breast surgery and reconstructive breast surgery.

I perform breast augmentation with implants that create breasts from a full B cup to a D cup. I use both saline and silicone implants.

The majority of my patients are seeking an augmentation that allows them to fill out the clothes they wear, not to completely change their wardrobe. I believe that if an augmentation is properly performed and sized appropriately that the patient can “dress the breasts up” with nice cleavage if so desired but can also “dress them down” for other endeavors where cleavage might not be appropriate. The worst mistake made in breast augmentation is over augmenting a breast. A breast augmentation that is disproportionately large is embarrassing, uncomfortable and possibly damaging to the breasts. Learn more about your augmentation options.

Breast Lift

I frequently perform a breast lift with augmentation surgery. This is most frequently as a Mommy Makeover after pregnancies and breast-feeding have taken their toll. I often perform breast lift surgery also for patients who have had significant weight loss following bariatric surgery. Learn more about your lift options.

Breast Reconstruction

One of the most rewarding parts of my practice is my care for patients who require breast reconstruction following cancer or birth defects.

Most of my patients who require removal of a breast for the treatment of cancer can begin their breast reconstruction the same day as their mastectomy. I reconstruct breasts most commonly with breast implants but also use the patient's own tissue to help build the most attractive reconstructed breast possible.

I see many patients who require breast surgery for better symmetry of their breasts. It is not unusual for breasts to develop to different sizes. When this size difference is significant reconstructive breast surgery can create symmetry which makes dressing in clothes much more pleasant. This result can be achieved by either reducing the larger breast or augmenting the smaller breast. Learn more about your reconstruction options.

Breast Reduction

My patients who come to me for breast reduction surgery are the happiest patients in my practice. With this surgery the breasts are made considerably smaller and lifted to a more attractive position with better shape. This is a remarkably straightforward operation in most cases which requires very little recovery time. This operation changes lives and I am pleased to offer it to patients from their teenage years into their later adult years. This is very rewarding surgery for me and my patients. When performed properly, brow lift surgery can significantly rejuvenate the upper face. When performing this procedure I am very careful not to produce a surprised look to the brows, but it is extremely effective in relieving the facial appearance of anger or fatigue that is produced when the brows droop.

This surgery requires an incision at the anterior hairline or in the scalp. With this approach I can relax the forehead wrinkles and elevate the brows to a more rested and relaxed position. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with further lifting of the face itself.

I use dermabrasion alone or as part of a facial rejuvenation package. It is the most effective procedure I have used for correction of acne scarring and for smoothing the fine wrinkles around the mouth.

There is a down time of several weeks with this procedure to allow the skin to heal and the pink color to fade. However, my patients are very pleased with the smooth appearance of the skin after dermabrasion.

Eyelid Rejuvenation

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a very rewarding procedure for my patients. It is most commonly performed to remove the excess fold of skin of the upper lids and to remove the bulging fat bags of the lower lids. This is a relatively simple procedure that can take years off of the appearance of the face.

For my patients I am interested in a natural result that does not change the appearance of the eyes but rather gives them a more youthful and rested appearance.

Facial Surgery

I am pleased to offer my patients facial surgery for improvement of all parts of the face from the forehead and brows to the chin and neck. One of the most common procedures I perform is blepharoplasty surgery which rejuvenates the eyes and alleviates that tired look which concerns many of my patients in their 40s and 50s.

I also frequently perform facelift surgery which improves the cheeks, jaw line and neck. I am very adamant in my focus on facial rejuvenation that the surgery does not change the appearance of the patient so much that they are no longer recognizable. I am embarrassed about some of the aggressive facelifts that are seen in the media. The worst type of facelift result is the face that has been over operated with extreme tightening and use of fillers. Many of my patients are pleased with the relaxed but rejuvenated look that can be achieved with a well designed and executed facelift.

Face and eyelid surgery is often performed together for the Mother of the Bride practice that I have developed. These procedures certainly make one proud to be in all of those wedding pictures. Learn more about your facelift options.

Liposuction is a procedure which I use to improve many areas of the body and I also use it as an adjunct to many of the procedures I perform from facelift surgery to breast surgery to tummy tuck surgery.

It is important for my patients to understand that liposuction surgery is not a weight reduction procedure but is a sculpting procedure that can improve areas that are diet resistant and just cannot be improved any further with exercise. These areas often include the abdomen, hips, flanks and thighs. I feel that a safe and well designed liposuction procedure can reduce a patient several dress sizes and bring them to a point that they could not achieve in any other way. This is very rewarding surgery. Learn more about your liposuction options.
